Groundwater

Although groundwater makes up approximately 17% of Australia's "sustainable" water resources and accounts for over 30% of our total water consumption, it is poorly understood compared with what we know about surface water.

National Water Commission position on groundwater

The National Water Commission has released a position statement on groundwater. In the Commission's view groundwater is neither understood nor managed as well as it needs to be if this valuable resource is to be sustained into the future.

Groundwater and the National Water Initiative

Improved knowledge is critical to manage this resource sustainably and to meet National Water Initiative groundwater objectives.

Groundwater Action Plan

The Australian Government has invested in an $82 million national Groundwater Action Plan that is being managed by the National Water Commission. There are three key elements:

  1. National Groundwater Assessment Initiative
  2. Centre for Groundwater Research and Training
  3. Knowledge and Capacity Building component
