Dam wall overflow. Copyright CSIROWith basic water trading mechanisms now established, it is important that water markets work effectively and efficiently. Market performance can be improved by:

  • improving the provision of market information
  • improving confidence in market intermediaries
  • streamlining transaction processes
  • minimising transaction costs
  • improving market information.

'The 2010 Markets Report details a trading year characterised by improved water availability and increased volumes of water traded to the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder. The standout finding is the continued increase in volumes traded. Entitlement trade rose eight per cent from 1800 GL in 2008-09 to 1949 GL in 2009-10. Allocation trade also continued to grow significantly; up 16% from 2158 GL in 2008-09, to 2495 GL in 2009-10.'
