About the project

The project has developed a national approach for investigating and managing groundwater systems where there are limited data available. The initial phase of the project developed a classification system for poorly understood groundwater systems at a national level. Subsequently, case studies were used to make recommendations about minimum data requirements and minimum levels of investigation necessary for managing and investigating poorly understood groundwater systems. The main output of the project is a decision-support framework.

Project outcomes

This study provides guidance on the minimum data requirements (e.g. rainfall and land use data, bore networks) to adequately investigate groundwater systems with a low levels of use, and the level of investigation required in these areas to understand and develop management responses for the resource. The project provides a decision-support framework that will minimise the risk of over allocation in poorly understood groundwater systems.
