About the project
The Tasmanian Parliament has passed amendments to the Tasmanian Water Management Act 1999 to enable the management of groundwater. This places Tasmania in a unique position to learn from the experiences of other Australian states in developing best-practice groundwater management processes and procedures.
Conducted by the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries and Water, this project will develop state-wide groundwater management standards and will trial these during 2009-10 and 2010-11. Should the standards prove practical, they will then form the basis for Tasmania's groundwater management.
Project benefits
The project will improve the management of groundwater in Tasmania by:
- developing and testing state-wide groundwater management standards based on the lessons learnt in other jurisdictions
- testing those standards prior to their state-wide application.
This will greatly aid the implementation of the National Water Initiative in Tasmania.
