A new approach to accounting for groundwater-dependent ecosystems and surface water systems

Project details

Objective: To ensure that environmental water requirements for groundwater-dependent ecosystems and surface water/groundwater connectivity are included in future Victorian water sharing plans
Funding:

$300,000 plus GST

Jurisdiction: Victoria
Commences: January 2010
Completion: March 2012

About the project

This project, conducted by the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment, will develop a new approach to account for groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) and surface water systems when developing water management plans.

Existing groundwater management plans in Victoria have not adopted a consistent approach to accounting for the water requirements of groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) and surface water systems.

This project will cooperatively develop and document the approach to be adopted for future groundwater management plans. It will entail extensive engagement with the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment and Rural Water Corporations.

Project benefits

The project will ensure that environmental water requirements for groundwater-dependent ecosystems and surface water/groundwater connectivity are included in future Victorian water sharing plans. This will advance the National Water Imitative (NWI), which is committed to striking a balance between water for consumptive and environmental uses.
