  • Policy design on managed aquifer recharge: A Waterlines report presenting work undertaken by CSIRO on policy design for MAR summarises policy options analysis and recommendations for the separation of water rights to harvesting, recharge and extraction of stormwater into and out of aquifers.
  • Boosting Australian water and agricultural research: New Commission funding of $1.8 million will augment and continue the ABARES annual survey of irrigation farms. This project will improve understanding of structural adjustment issues and the impact of water reform on communities.
  • Waterlines report to assist water planners: A Waterlines report on the Alignment of water planning and catchment planning sets out principles for aligning water allocation and catchment plans that can be applied in any Australian jurisdiction. The report includes a trial of these principles applied in the Hunter region of New South Wales.
  • New funding targets northern rivers research adoption: A new $1.7 million Commission project will encourage water planners and managers to adopt the research results from Tropical Rivers and Coastal Knowledge (TRaCK) and related projects in northern Australia.
  • Waterlines report on tools for water planning: The Commission has released a Waterlines report outlining the results of a project to develop and trial 'water planning tools' that will enable better planning and management of Australia's water resources.
  • Supporting Indigenous aspirations on water in the North: A new Commission project will provide funding of $800 000 to develop knowledge and understanding of Indigenous social, cultural and economic aspirations related to northern Australian land and water management and development.
  • $300 000 to explore Indigenous water characteristics: At a time when many jurisdictions are seeking guidance on mechanisms to effectively engage with Indigenous people in water planning and management, a new Commission project will provide options developed from an Indigenous perspective.
  • First Great Artesian Basin shared water assessment in 30 years: The Australian Government will provide $6.25 million to improve our understanding of the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) system. This will help governments, industry and communities sustainably use and manage GAB water.
  • Water Account 2008-09: Late last year the Australian Bureau of Statistics released the Water Account for 2008-09. The Water Account presents information on the supply and use of water in the Australian economy in both physical and monetary terms.
  • Upcoming events: The Commission will have a presence at the following upcoming events:
    * 6th Annual Water Symposium, 25 March:  Acting CEO James Cameron will be presenting on the next round of challenges for water reform in Sydney
    * Australian Water Congress 2011, 2-3 March: Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer Kerry Olsson to present
