Australian water markets report 2009-2010
The Commission supports the introduction of legislative and administrative reforms to encourage the development of water markets in Australia. Reforms that support water markets are now generally in place in most developed water systems, however there is a need to improve the efficiency of market operation.
The availability of accurate and timely market information assists in improving efficient market operation. In support of this, the Commission produces Australian Water Markets Reports, which are funded through the Raising National Water Standards Program.
The primary objective of the reports is to inform market participants about market structure, trading activity, prices and key policy drivers. Providing this type of information to both direct and indirect participants in the market is an important step towards improving market performance.
The reports are consolidated, annual, nationwide reports on Australia's water markets. They are intended to be the definitive, publicly accessible and timely review of annual trade activity, and provide statements of past activity over the course of previous water year.
Australian Water Markets Report - 2009-2010
In compiling the 2010 report, the Commission engaged Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu to assist with data analysis, and ABARES to produce supporting maps. This year marked the second year of water data collection by the Bureau of Meteorology under the Water Act 2007.
The Commission recognises the significant efforts involved in producing the report, not only by the bureau but also by the entities named under the Water Regulations 2008. In particular, the Commission acknowledges the assistance of the states and territories in validating the data and improving the contextual information provided in the 2010 Markets Report.
The Commission also acknowledges the contributions of other data providers not named under the Water Regulations 2008.
