Cost-effectiveness of rainwater tanks in urban Australia
March 2007
This statement outlines our position on rainwater tanks as an urban water supply option.
Rainwater tanks have a long history of use in Australia, especially in many rural areas which often depend upon them for household water. More recently the use of tanks has grown in urban areas.
We believe that decisions about the contribution that rainwater tanks make to urban water management need to be made with better information and transparency.
To inform the discussion of rainwater tanks as a water supply option, the National Water Commission commissioned a Waterlines report to provide an analysis of the cost effectiveness of rainwater tanks in urban Australia.
