Development of an Australian environmental water report

Objective: To promote environmental water management reporting and management around Australia
Funding:

$1.1m plus applicable GST

Jurisdiction: National
Commencing: December 2009
Completion: 2012

About the project

This national project will contribute to improved transparency of the management and delivery of environmental water objectives and outcomes across Australia.

Clause 85 of the National Water Initiative (NWI) requires annual reporting arrangements to be developed on environmental water rules, their activation, the extent of their implementation, and the effectiveness of the use of resources in delivering environmental and other public benefit outcomes.

The first product from this project, the Australian environmental water managment report 2010  will assist in that process by clearly outlining the different environmental water management arrangements in each jurisdiction (including the Commonwealth).

On the basis of this report, the Commission will continue to work on developing environmental water reporting over the next two years of the project.

Project benefits

The the Australian environmental water managment report 2010 delivered a consolidated report on environmental water management in Australia. This has:

  • transparently reported environmental water rules and entitlements, their management and the reporting arrangements in place to monitor environmental water management outcomes
  • promoted improved environmental water management practices by allowing jurisdictions to compare approaches and share knowledge
  • collected national data on environmental water management to promote NWI outcomes
  • provided an authoritative basis to identify gaps and support improvement in environmental water management.
