Ecological outcomes of flow regimes

Objective: To tie together ecological and flow data, creating predictive models to help provide a more accurate assessment of ecologically sustainable levels of extraction in the Murray Darling Basin MDB.
Funding:

Up to $1,281,000 plus applicable GST from the Australian Government towards cost associated with supporting the work program. The total value of the project is up to $1,281,000.

Jurisdiction: Multi state
Commencing: May 2008
Completion: September 2010

Progress

Project details

This project is proceeding in two phases. The first is the collection and collation of a range of data sets detailing ecological system responses to flow regimes. Experts with access to unpublished and difficult-to-source data are engaged to collate these data sets.

The second phase is to infer quantitative relations between flow regimes and environmental outcomes. Experts will attend a workshop to negotiate and refine ideas on these relationships, and then develop guidelines for their management.

Project benefits

Metadatabase - sharing knowledge on data that can provide empirical evidence for describing relations between flow regime and ecological outcomes.

Guidelines - tools to facilitate the development of environmental flow regimes.

Assessment - better appreciation of sustainable levels of extraction for the MDB using quantifiable relationships between flows and ecosystem responses.
