About the project
This project was designed to progress understanding of high priority issues relating to aquatic ecosystems in Australia. It had six components, each of which is a discrete project.
The components were:
- groundwater-dependent ecosystems: A review of biodiversity, ecological processes and ecosystem services
- floodplain ecosystems: resilience, value of ecosystem services and principles for diverting water from floodplains
- workshop on high conservation value frameworks
- gap analysis and strategy development for national level estuary environmental flows policies
- the ecological considerations of irrigation infrastructure refurbishment
- recovery pathways after flow restoration in rivers
Project benefits
This project enabled a review of concepts in relation to Australian aquatic ecosystems to provide a series of discussion starters to move thinking forward in the above areas. The project also aimed to ensure that policy makers, planners and water managers have a better understanding of the environmental requirements in their systems. A key part of each component was to identify what further work will be necessary in each area to provide for the best environmental outcomes.
