About the project
Water is commonly co-produced during oil and gas production. Australia possesses both conventional and unconventional petroleum resources and the coal seam gas (CSG) industry is expected to be a significant source of co-produced water into the future, particularly in Queensland.
Co-produced water is typically saline and can contain other impurities. In other countries there have been a number of management options used for this water including re-injection into isolated aquifer formations, release into streams, use for irrigation and evaporation. In Australia, there have been a number of attempts to use the water beneficially. In Queensland, for example, the water has been used for wash down water in feed lots near Chinchilla.
The project has produced a paper discussing both the extent of co-produced water volumes and the potential management options for this water.
Project benefits
The paper:
- reports on the current and future extent of co-produced water volumes in Australia
- documents possible management options for this water.
Progress
August 2011: Complete.
