assessment of sea water intrusion progress

Project Update - March 2010

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with Geoscience Australia to deliver the National Scale Vulnerability Assessment of Sea Water Intrusion project.

In partnership with state departments, the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training, and CSIRO Water for a Healthy Country Flagship, Geoscience Australia will carry out a national baseline assessment and prioritisation of coastal groundwater resources currently affected by salt water intrusion (SWI) and potentially at risk in the future if no further action is taken.

A two-day workshop in Canberra, is scheduled for early May 2010.  The purpose of the workshop is to:

  • provide an overview of the project and present findings from the literature review that summarises current knowledge of SWI in Australia
  • review a proposed conceptual model framework to carry out the SWI vulnerability assessment
  • provide an opportunity to outline current work on SWI, and the relationship it may have with products from this project
  • seek support to review existing case studies
  • discuss stakeholders perspectives on the importance of SWI and the threat it poses to state assets and water resources
  • discuss data and knowledge gaps
  • identify current and future priorities for SWI vulnerability assessment at a national scale.

The project is expected to be completed in May 2012.
