About the project

The National Water Commission (NWC) recognised that there are aquifers throughout the country where a lack of information has led to management, planning and community issues.

This project provides funding to the states and territories to fill knowledge and scientific gaps in specific stressed or priority aquifers to better inform water planning and management. A series of sub-projects will be funded under the overarching Characterisation of Stressed Aquifer Groundwater Action Plan theme.

Sub projects under this project include:

Lower Ovens River catchment water resource assessment ($132,871 plus GST)

Project benefits

Project funding is specifically aimed at filling knowledge gaps for individual aquifers. The funding covers (but is not limited to):

  • the collection of additional data (including bore drilling)
  • monitoring equipment
  • investigation and characterisation of an aquifer or links between aquifers or surface water
  • enhanced groundwater modelling
  • improved water balance or sustainable yield evaluations.

Where possible, priority is given to aquifers under stress and aquifers that cross jurisdictional borders so as to promote a more regional approach.
