About the project
The project has improved the level of information available to water managers, water users and the community on the behaviour of groundwater systems in NSW. With approximately 110 telemetered data loggers installed in groundwater bores across NSW.
A project to monitor groundwater at this scale has not previously been conducted in Australia. It has demonstrated how groundwater information can be collected and provided to water managers and users in almost real time through posting on the Internet.
Project benefits
The project has:
- aided in the management and decision making process for the trading of groundwater and the sustainable management of groundwater
- targeted groundwater sources where there is competition between environmentally significant ecosystems and water users and over allocated groundwater systems
- allowed the monitoring of surface and groundwater interaction and allow better management of water as a single resource in the areas targeted
- provided water managers and users warning of over extraction and possible impacts on aquifers.
