Multi state

Commenced:

About the project

The Australian Government is contributing funds to provide assistance to jurisdictions to carry out strategic assessment and management of priority groundwater systems. Assistance may be in the form of additional monitoring programmes, metering, modelling, yield estimation or funding to implement management strategies. The activities carried out will be determined by states and territories in conjunction with the National Water Commission. In some states and territories, the project may be managed by catchment management authorities as appropriate.

Project benefits

The project will:

  • Identify with jurisdictions priority (stressed and/or highly interconnected) groundwater management units (GMUs) across Australia
  • Provide additional resources in priority/stressed GMUs to improve understanding and management of surface water/groundwater connectivity
  • To assist in determining management options for priority GMUs to ensure sustainable extraction regimes under water management plans
  • Improve groundwater management processes in jurisdictions and improve measurement and monitoring of groundwater in priority GMUs.

This activity has links to other Raising National Water Standards activities, including the Australian Water Resources 2005, the baseline assessment of water resources currently underway.
