About the project

The project has enabled more informed and enhanced groundwater management in the intake beds of the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) in New South Wales. It has assisted in achieving GAB Sustainability Initiative (GABSI) outcomes of providing the continuation of access to artesian supplies and opportunities for improved management of water dependent ecosystems, particularly protection of springs, and water-remote ecosystems.

Project benefits

The project has assisted the Great Artesian Basin Technical Working Group and Consultative Committee (GABTWG and GABCC) in achieving GABSI objectives for NSW by providing a sound factual base for understanding the recharge processes and rates in the intake beds to attain a better estimate of sustainable yield in the NSW portion of the Great Artesian Basin. The project has enhanced sustainable management and improve knowledge for other GAB activities such as bore capping. The project has identified recharge areas to the GAB where extraction is occurring which will improve management in the region and in the GAB.
