Water for Australia's arid zone - identifying and assessing Australia's palaeovalley groundwater resources - progress
November 2009
Drilling by the NT Department of Natural Resources, Environment, the Arts and Sport drill rig is complete in the Lake Mackay region of the Northern Territory.
One of the bores drilled as part of the project has had a hand pump installed to enable travellers to this remote part of the country to access water. Additionally, geotechnical surveys in the Lake Mackay region were completed in late 2008/early 2009. Preliminary field work in the Paterson and Murchison regions was completed in the second half of 2009.
Following the second workshop of the Technical Advisory Group in May 2009 the following actions occurred:
- significant data gaps were identified for the existing geoscientific, hydrologic and geophysical data for each demonstration site
- the usefulness and applicability of the project's scientific and technical methods , including the methods already trialed and those proposed for future use, were evaluated
- the analytical data and results obtained from preliminary studies, particularly for the remote sensing techniques and interpretive methods that have been already applied to different demonstration sites, were summarised and assessed
- detailed work programs developed for each demonstration site were refined.
