Development of an adaptive environmental water register

Project details

Objective:

To make publicly available the details of adaptive environmental licences including volumes, locations and intended environmental use.

Funding:

 $200 000

Jurisdiction:

New South Wales

Commenced:

November 2007

Completed: August 2010

About the project

The project made the details of adaptive environmental licences publicly available - including volumes, locations and intended environmental use.

The register has been built and populated with New South Wales data.

Adaptive environmental water will be used predominantly for the environment. However it is possible that the allocation might be traded to other water users in circumstances when it is not needed by the environment. The register will therefore record any trading of adaptive environmental water allocations.

Project benefits

This project allows NSW to meet a clear National Water Initiative commitment in its Implementation Plan to create a register of environmental water, providing statutory recognition of environmental entitlement and public transparency in environmental water provision.
