About the project

This activity includes three projects to improve water pricing across Australia. These projects will:

  • review and 'stocktake' approaches to charging for water storage and delivery services and approaches to recovering the costs of water planning and management activities across jurisdictions
  • develop pricing principles to assist states and territories meet NWI commitments to achieve consistency in pricing policies across jurisdictions
  • explore alternative approaches to charging for urban water.

Project benefits

The projects, combined, will further advance the development and implementation of best practice water pricing policies as specified under the National Water Initiative.

The Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council endorsed the NWI pricing principles on 23 April 2010.

By developing and implementing pricing principles, jurisdictions will be facilitating fairer trade across sectors and jurisdictions, driving greater water use efficiency, and facilitating investment in water efficient technology.
