About the project

The Australian Government is funding the development of specifications for new water entitlements which would be required for various new water products likely to be introduced into the water market in the near future. Examples of 'new' water products to be looked at include; irrigation return flows, water intercepted from surface flows, interconnected groundwater and surface waters and a range of urban water products.

Another component of the project will be to conduct preliminary investigations into possible implications arising from the introduction of these new water entitlements into the water market. This includes implications for current and future water planning processes, water trading markets, and the effects on existing traditional water entitlements.

Project benefits

The Raising National Water Standards investment will produce a discussion paper which looks at the emergence of these different and 'new' water entitlements and suggests possible implications of their introduction.

The findings of this project will lead to further work in this area and will provide definitions for relevant 'new' water products and their introduction into the water market.
