About the project

The Australian Government is contributing funds to the first phase of an urban resource planning and assessment project. The first phase will include a review and assessment of existing water restrictions across all states and territories in accordance with the requirements of the National Water Initiative.

This review and assessment will help to identify how to better integrate urban water management and planning by examining current policies, education strategies, the impact of these policies and the extent to which they have been integrated with other long term planning for urban areas.

Project benefits

The Raising National Water Standards investment in the urban resource planning and assessment project will advance the National Water Initiative in achieving more effective and efficient approaches to urban water demand management and supply planning.

The Phase 1 review and assessment will inform a broader metropolitan resource planning and assessment project. The broader project is under development and is expected to commence early in the 2006/2007 financial year. In addition, the review and assessment could be expected to inform a broader debate about the effectiveness and transparency of water restrictions and guidance on their use in urban water management.
