About the project

Minister Wong at Cullen Trust launch

Minister Penny Wong announcing the Peter Cullen Water and Environment Trust.

The Peter Cullen Water and Environment Trust has been established to create an enduring legacy commensurate with Peter Cullen's contribution to freshwater ecology, to science communication and to water research, policy and management in Australia.

The Trust will invest in building water science capacity in Australia, in informing national water and environment debates and in contributing to improved environmental water management.

The objectives of the Trust are to:

  • protect and enhance the Australian natural environment, in particular aquatic environments and their catchments
  • provide and facilitate learning, communications and informed debate about aquatic environments and their catchments, and about things that influence them.

Project benefits

The Peter Cullen Water and Environment Trust may support early career researchers and people who can "speak for the rivers" with clarity and credibility and may also support proposals to build capacity in science and science policy linkages.  The Trust will honour and continue Peter's legacy by building water science knowledge and skills in Australia.

This project will advance the understanding of aquatic ecosystem knowledge in Australia. The project aligns closely to objectives of the National Water Initiative (NWI) by addressing the need to better understand aquatic ecosystems and to build the capacity of Australian scientists to integrate knowledge and science into policy debates.
