2008-09 urban water performance report indicators and definitions handbook and auditing requirements

April 2009

The Urban Water Performance Report Indicators and Definitions Handbook provides detailed definitions for all indicators to be included in the National Performance Report 2008-09. This report is due for release in 2010. The indicators and definitions handbook ensures there is consistency in reporting across jurisdictions. For the 2008-09 report, there is also an auditing requirements document.

The handbook was jointly developed by the Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA), the National Water Commission and the parties to the National Water Initiative (NWI). It is part of the commitment under the initiative to annually report independently and publicly on benchmarking of pricing and service quality for metropolitan, non-metropolitan and rural water-delivery agencies.

The indicator set of 117 performance indicators provided in this handbook are grouped under the following headings:

  • water resources
  • asset data
  • customers
  • environment
  • health
  • finance
  • pricing.

The performance indicators and definitions provided in this handbook are a collaborative effort between WSAA and the NWI parties. The NWI parties, led by the Commission, have consulted with WSAA, WSAA members and other water utilities in the development of the performance indicators and definitions.
