National assessment of water resources projects

Investments to improve understanding of water resources across Australia and increase national capacity to assess the use, availability and state of these resources over time.

Announced projects include:

Australian Water Resources Information System (AWRIS)

Building and maintaining a national database and web-based reporting system for water information Australia-wide.

National inventory of water stressed systems

Establishing a national inventory of stressed catchments and aquifers, based on a nationally consistent set of criteria and published data. This project is also listed under the water-dependant ecosystems and water planning and management themes.

Collecting agriculture and water use census data at the mesh block coding level

Providing a form of small-scale, user-defined reporting against the 2005-06 Agricultural Census that is referred to as mesh blocks.

Baseline assessment of water resources (Australian Water Resource 2005)

Providing information on surface and groundwater availability, water use, water quality and river health across the country.
