About the project
The National Water Initiative (NWI) calls for increased water use efficiency in domestic and commercial settings (NWI Para 90 ii); and to encourage the reuse and recycling of wastewater where cost effective (NWI Para 90 iii).
This project developed best practice guidelines for the design and installation of urban greywater and stormwater systems through 2 handbooks and a Waterlines publication. It included an overview of existing codes, standards, technical solutions and reports at local, state and national levels and addressed regulatory and technical barriers to the installation of re-use and recycling systems and the household level.
The guidelines form an essential reference for all plumbers and household installers for greywater and stormwater recycling systems installation and encourage the safe and reliable reuse of wastewater.
Project benefits
The program is making a significant contribution towards the NWI by facilitating the safe reuse and recycling of stormwater and greywater increasing water use efficiency in domestic and commercial settings.
The guidelines are providing plumbers with the tools to make recommendations on water conservation to householders, resulting in economic and ecological benefits.
The products build on the success of the Green Plumbers Program and contribute to Australia's urban water security through increasing the opportunities for safe household recycling.
The findings also complement the introduction of National Guidelines for Water Recycling.
