Using recycled water for drinking

Waterlines Report No 2 - June 2007

This report explores the use of recycled water to supplement drinking water supplies in Australian towns and cities.

The report was prepared for the National Water Commission by GHD.

The Commission stated in its report to the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in 2006 that it is essential that all water supply options are considered in order to find the most effective combination of means to secure water for our cities.

This report explores how the use of recycled water compares to other drinking supply options, some of the risks and how they are managed, and community views and attitudes. The report provides an accessible overview of national and international experiences of indirect and direct potable re-use and can be used to assist communities when they are considering the option of sourcing recycled water for drinking purposes.
