The Commission won a Silver Award in the FMA Agencies category at the prestigious Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) 2007-08 Annual Report Awards ceremony, competing against all Australian Government departments and public service agencies. Gold awards went to the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the Tax Office.
Guide to the report
This report details the operations of the National Water Commission for the 2007-08 financial year. In reporting on the Commission's performance, the Annual Report outlines our contributions to improved water management around Australia.
1. Review by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
In this section, the Chief Executive Officer summarises the Commission's performance during 2007-08, including an outline of major activities and achievements.
2. Future priorities for water reform
The essay in this section reports on the first biennial assessment of progress under the National Water Initiative as well as a 2008 update on future water reform priorities. The section also features three of the position statements released by the Commission during 2007-08: groundwater, water planning and urban water pricing.
3. Agency overview
This section provides an overview of the Commission's:
- role - summarising statutory responsibilities
- structure - describing the elements of the organisation and profiling the Commissioners.
4. Performance review
Responding directly to the performance indicators set out in the Commission's agency budget statements, this section provides:
- a performance reporting overview
- a financial summary
- a description and analysis of performance against the three effectiveness indicators for the Commission's outcome - The sustainable management and use of Australia's water resources.
5. Management and accountability
This section addresses performance reporting requirements for management and accountability, including corporate governance, external scrutiny, stakeholder engagement, human resources, financial management and environmental performance.
6. Financial statements
The Commission's audited financial statements for the period 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2008 are presented in this section.
